AK SHEEP HUNT

ALASKA SHEEP HUNTING
ALASKA SHEEP HUNTING

The Chugach Mountains, known for producing quality sheep is where HCO will take you on your quest for a Dall Sheep. The area we hunt covers a vast diversity of terrain including glaciers and high alpine mountain valleys. Typically our hunts begin at mile 115 of the Glenn Highway with a flight in a bush plane with a local air service out to a spike camp. From there we will either trike out on day hunts and return to our spike camp at the end of each evening, or via backpack and leg power traverse through the country using small mountaineering tents to provide shelter as we search for a high quality ram.

Our season begins August 10th and lasts until September 20th. Dall Sheep reach maturity at around eight years of age, so our rams must be full curl to be legal. Our area is on a draw style hunt. The application process begins November 1st each year and ends December 15th, with the results given by the end of February.

Our Dall Sheep hunts are 8-day hunts with at least two days allotted, one on either end of the hunt, for traveling to and from camp. The average sheep in our area are 36-37 inches, and 13- 13 ¼” on the bases. Although our area has produced at and above the 40 inches. Hunting Dall Sheep is an extremely physical and challenging hunt. We recommend being in top shape, as it is crucial in upping your odds at taking a beautiful trophy.
